It's official! The Virginia Department of Education, as part of the No Child Left
Behind Enhancing Education Through Technology Ed Tech Program (NCLB Ed Tech), has awarded
the Consortium for Interactive Instruction $638,000.00 a year for the next five years to
support teacher training activities designed to increase effective utilization of
educational technology for teaching and learning.
Funds from this program will primarily be used to initiate new teacher training services
or to expand existing ones. These professional development opportunities will be available
to educators in a variety of ways including on-line via the web; on-line via live two-way
audio and video delivered via H.323; and face-to-face through a series of hands-on
workshops and seminars ranging from one day to a full week. What's even more, these
services will be available to educators at no charge.
Here's a snapshot of what's planned:
Web-Based Courses - Teachers can now take web-based courses from a variety of providers
including PBS TeacherLine and the C.I.I. Certificates of Achievement are awarded to anyone
who successfully completes one of these courses. Teachers can work toward any or all of
the five new "C.I.I. Technology Integration Certificates"-The Interdisciplinary
Certificate, The Mathematics Certificate, The Science Certificate, The Social Studies
Certificate, and The English Certificate-by completing four courses within a three year
period.
Hands-On Training - A variety of new hands-on training opportunities are now available as
a result of the NCLB Ed Tech funding including "Integrating unitedstreaming in
Core Curriculum Areas" , "Introduction to On-line Learning" , two graduate
credit classes offered by The University of Virginia: "Teaching for Standards
Mastery" and "American History: Through the Lens of Time", and Tech Trek .
Course offerings are published in the C.I.I. newsletter Interactive and online at www.whro.org/cii.
In addition to the training activities described above, NCLB Ed Tech funding is being used
to license unitedstreaming for all of the schools participating in the grant and to
develop a "Cultural Portal" featuring educational materials from local museums
and cultural institutions that have been organized by SOL.
