Professional Development

Find and register for training in all subjects at all grade levels delivered by broadcast video, face-to-face, online via the web, at a distance using two-way videoconferencing, or “blended” incorporating a combination of delivery modes. 

Face-to-Face

C.I.I. Hands-On Workshops
Each year, WHRO and the C.I.I. offer hundreds of hands-on technology workshops in the WHRO labs and throughout the region, covering topics from Beginning Computing to Web Design, and everything in between.

Virginia's Statewide Praxis I Tutorial Assistance Program is the state's effort to assist teachers who hold a provisional or a special education conditional license to pass all sections of the Praxis I test.

Graduate Credit Courses
Throughout the year, WHRO and the C.I.I. offer several CEU and Graduate Credit Courses covering Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP) and Internet Applications for the classroom.

Tech Trek
Each summer in this weeklong residential immersion into technology participants learn databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, Internet tools, web design, multimedia presentations, and word processing, while focusing on the TSIP and technology standards.

VADOE Training Schedule
Check the Technology Workshops schedule posted on the Virginia Department of Education web site on a regular basis for additions and changes.

Video-Based

School Talk a monthly national award winning program featuring video clips and Internet sites for teachers, “One on One" interviews with outstanding educators and students, Schools of the Month, video streaming tips, and on-location segments highlighting exciting school projects and activities as well as upcoming professional development events.

Teachers Lounge
School Talk and Net Files air on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. WHRO’s Teaching NOW! airs on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. The DOE Hour airs monthly at 2:00 on Tuesdays.  On Sunday afternoons from 3:00-4:00 p.m. School Talk and Education News Parents Can Use air as part of a new weekend edition of Teacher’s Lounge.

Teaching NOW! investigates the relationships between education and technology. Teaching NOW! explores the issues, ideas, and strategies of technology integration by showcasing case studies from across the nation of our K-12 schools and our colleges and universities.

Principals: Leaders & Learners is a seven part series that includes half-hour programs on balancing management and leadership roles, setting high expectations and standards, demanding content and instruction that ensures student achievement, creating a culture of adult learning, using multiple sources of data as diagnostic tools, and actively engaging the community.  Broadcast Schedule

Net Files is a 30-minute, monthly, news magazine style, in-service, television program that shows teachers how to be "Net Wise" by demonstrating the tools and techniques they need to successfully integrate the Internet into the curriculum; highlights exemplary "Net Classrooms" where real teachers use the Internet to teach real kids in real classrooms; helps promote "Net Safety" by informing teachers of potential problems before encountering them in the classroom; and demystifies "Net Speak" by providing teachers with commonly used phrases and their definitions.  Video Streaming and Lesson Plans at http://whro.unitedstreaming.com.  Broadcast Schedule

Web-Based

C.I.I. Anytime Anywhere courses provide high-quality online professional development for Virginia educators through a number of courses that specifically address Virginia Standards of Learning.

Virginia’s PBS TeacherLine provides high-quality online professional development for Virginia educators through nearly 100 research-based courses at every grade level from PreK-12 in mathematics, reading, technology integration, teaching strategies, science, interdisciplinary, and curriculum mapping.

Exemplary Teacher Segments
To help increase community understanding of technology integration efforts funded through the No Child Left Behind EdTech Grant and its effect on student performance in Superintendent Region 2, the C.I.I. has begun creating a series of video clips highlighting local technology integration “best practices”. In addition to streaming these segments here, they are also incorporated in various television programs that are broadcast throughout the region on WHRO Channel 15 or through local cable channels.
